Staff explained the amendments would update how the city invokes the model International Fire Code, including a provision that limits outdoor storage of certain flammable materials by referring to I‑1 and I‑2 zoning districts. Staff said the intent is to avoid a situation in which fire‑code storage restrictions inadvertently prevent future infill development in residential areas. "Because we are invoking the zoning code, even though it's in the fire code, you guys need to sign off on that," a staff presenter said, adding that several specific exceptions had been drafted but the commission did not have the text available.
Multiple commissioners said they had not received the ordinance text in their packet and that the commission could not properly consider the amendment without it. One commissioner moved to table the item to allow commissioners time to review the ordinance; the motion was seconded and passed by voice vote.
Staff indicated the item will return once the ordinance language is distributed to commissioners for review. No substantive policy decision was made at the meeting.
