North Liberty makes HY Centennial Center event lead a full-time post to support growth
Summary
Citing strong bookings and repeated hiring difficulties for a part-time role, the council approved converting the H/Y Centennial event center’s part-time event lead position to full‑time (estimated budget impact about $30,000), and authorized staff flexibility on salary.

The North Liberty City Council voted May 12 to convert the HY Centennial Center’s part-time event lead post into a full-time position to support growing bookings and to improve recruitment and retention.
Staff reported that a 29-hour-per-week posting had been advertised multiple times without success. “We’ve offered this job as a part-time job three times… we’re really struggling,” said Nick Bergus, who explained the operational need for more staff coverage at events. HR Director Alexis Miller said the part-time posting carried a starting wage of $18.50 an hour and part-time benefits; making the role full-time would add benefits and better compete in the local labor market. She told council the budget impact of the change is “right around $30,000,” not counting potential new revenue the position could help generate.
Why it matters: the HY Centennial Center is booking larger events, including a recently announced concert in September, and staff said additional capacity is needed for sales, weekday rentals, event coverage and to reduce weekend strain on current staff. Council members framed the change as an investment to grow the venue’s revenue and improve operations.
Council action: after discussion, a council member moved and the body seconded the motion to make the event lead position full-time and approved it by voice vote. Council also asked staff to retain flexibility on the salary range when hiring.
What’s next: Human Resources and department staff will post and recruit for the full-time role, using a hiring rubric and adjusted salary range as needed to attract qualified candidates.
