Parks commission favors Option One to replace playground at North Liberty Library

The Parks & Recreation Commission indicated a consensus to pursue Option One for the replacement playground adjacent to the North Liberty Library after staff presented three proposals and fielded questions about accessibility, safety and budget.

Commission members and parks staff reviewed renderings of the three options and discussed features including wheelchair-accessible routes, sensory elements such as musical panels, and differing age ranges of likely users. Staff said both Options One and Three include musical elements and that Option Two lacked some of the interaction staff preferred. "Option One is really eye-catching," a commissioner said during discussion; staff noted Option Three also had strong features favored by the before/after school program.

Parks staff told the commission the playground replacement was budgeted in last year’s budget and said they had budgeted $255,000 for the project. Staff also explained procurement will use the cooperative purchasing program Sourcewell and cited discount figures during the meeting; the transcript contained unclear numeric details about the discounts, which staff said reflect Sourcewell pricing.

Next steps, staff said, are purchase and scheduling. Procurement can begin after July and installation could take place this fall if the adjacent recreation center parking-lot improvements finish in time; otherwise staff expect installation next spring to avoid simultaneous heavy construction. Staff added that the existing play equipment will be recycled where possible and that the site's dragon play feature will be saved for future use.

The commission did not take a formal roll-call vote on the design choice at the meeting; staff said they would proceed with purchase steps and scheduling now that the group has expressed a clear preference for Option One.
