Aplington council approves claims, roof and furnace contracts, and funds ARC water heater; budget workshop set

Aplington Mayor Jason Mehmen called the March 11, 2026 regular meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. The council approved the consent agenda, including minutes, the financial report through February and a claims list, by a motion from Council member Jacobs seconded by Council member Klahsen; the motion carried unanimously.
The clerk presented a detailed claims list totaling $140,049.61 that covered police, fire and ambulance supplies and services, library subscriptions, utilities and equipment. The council then heard public works business: Public Works Director Jeff Ridder presented two bids to replace roofs on the Library, Post Office and Community Center and reported that VisuSewer cleared roots from sewer lines on the 300 block of 7th Street and the 800 block of Nash Street. Council member Meyer moved to accept the quote from Grell Roofing LLC; Council member Klahsen seconded and the roll-call vote was all ayes.
A building permit for Brittany Fox was recorded as approved. Police Chief Lind and Fire representative Greg Nevenhoven provided routine monthly call updates. Library Director Alexis Karsjens reviewed spring break programming and other upcoming events at the library. The clerk reported, on behalf of Chief Krull, that the ambulance passed its annual state inspection.
The council reviewed two furnace replacement quotes for City Hall and, on a motion by Klahsen seconded by Wolff, approved the quote from Joe's Heating, Cooling & Plumbing. Tracy Jones, representing the Aplington Recreation Complex, requested replacement of the ARC’s water heater with a tankless unit; the council voted (Klahsen/Meyer) to have the city cover the cost of the water heater while the ARC will pay for the plumber’s labor.
The council discussed an increase in the ARC’s liability insurance premium and declined to cover the higher premium; the clerk was instructed to contact the city’s insurance agent to explore whether the ARC’s required liability limits could be reduced.
Council set a budget workshop for March 25 at 6:15 p.m. There being no further business, a motion by Jacobs, seconded by Klahsen, to adjourn carried unanimously and the meeting ended at 7:12 p.m.
