Aplington council approves fire fee proposal, orders truck and sets tax-levy hearing

The Aplington City Council on Feb. 11 approved a package of routine purchases and administrative actions, voted to proceed with a fee proposal for the Fire & EMS building and set a public hearing on the proposed Fiscal Year 2027 property tax levy for March 25 at 6 p.m.
The meeting opened at 6:00 p.m. with Mayor Jason Mehmen presiding. The council unanimously approved the consent agenda — the meeting agenda, Jan. 14 minutes, the financial report ending January 2026 and a list of claims. Council members present were Jacobs, Meyer, Klahsen and Wolff; Prier was absent.
On public works matters the council approved purchasing used rubber mats from Kidquest at $10 each (motion by Council member Klahsen; second Jacobs) and approved a riding lawnmower trade-in and purchase (motion by Council member Meyer; second Wolff). Police Chief Lind provided the monthly calls update. Brian Stark of MSA presented a Fee Proposal for the Fire & EMS building; the council voted to proceed with the proposal (motion by Council member Meyer; second Wolff). Library director Alexis Karsjens reported on upcoming library events including the summer reading program and children’s programming.
Holly Harken reported on donations and progress for the community pool project. The city clerk reported, on behalf of Ambulance Chief Krull, that the ambulance siren requires repair by Lifeline and that the current splint vacuum mattress is no longer functional and must be replaced.
The council approved a liquor license for the Aplington Recreation Complex (motion by Council member Jacobs; second Klahsen). Chris Showalter of Butler County Emergency Management introduced himself and provided an emergency management update.
During budget discussions the council reviewed the proposed FY27 property tax levy and was reminded that the levy must be filed with the state by March 5, 2026. The council set a public hearing on the proposed levy for March 25 at 6 p.m. (motion by Council member Meyer; second Klahsen). The council also approved ordering a 2026 Ford F600 truck with a dump body, plow and sander; the truck will be paid for in FY27 from savings (motion by Council member Klahsen; second Meyer).
The meeting adjourned at 7:48 p.m. Revenues ending January 2026 were submitted in the clerk’s report; total revenues listed were $201,925.62 across city funds.
