Los Alamitos USD adopts math-placement policy, Unified PE course and LCAP

The Los Alamitos Unified School District board approved several curricular and accountability items at its June 23 meeting, including a new math-placement board policy, a new Unified Physical Education course at Los Alamitos High School, and the district’s 2026–27 Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Mrs. Reed presented the math-placement policy as a first reading and sought board approval to formalize current practices. Reed said the policy’s goal is to ensure multiple pathways so students can meet A–G requirements and to use data to avoid bias in course placement. “The goal of this board policy really is to make sure we have multiple pathways for all students to meet the A–G requirements,” Reed said.

Reed also described a curriculum decision to limit certain digital licenses and explained the district’s plan to use ST Math for K–1 with a target of about 30 minutes per week at the primary level and an upper-elementary threshold near 60 minutes a week.

The board approved a new Unified PE course at Los Alamitos High School designed to integrate students with disabilities and general-education students in inclusive physical education. Reed credited Cara Vienna and Alyssa Reyes at Los Alamitos High School for their work on the course and said the offering emphasizes participation, teamwork and lifelong wellness.

Finally, the board adopted the district’s 2026–27 LCAP following a public hearing; Reed said the plan reflects input from multiple stakeholder groups and was developed during the school year with contributions from district advisory committees and staff.

What’s next: The math-placement policy, Unified PE course and LCAP were adopted and will be implemented per district timelines; staff will proceed with curriculum scheduling, student placement processes and ongoing stakeholder engagement.
