Board reauthorizes Vision Academy flexible‑schedule program after administrators report rising course completions and graduates

Freddy Martinez, director for PEIs and pupil accounting, and Robert Lopez, director of Vision Academy, presented the annual review of the Optional Flexible School Day Program (OFSP) and recommended that the district continue participation and submit the 2026–27 application to TEA.
Martinez told trustees the program served 399 students between grades 9–12 in the most recent reporting period and that a large share of participants (about 92.2%) are Hispanic; roughly 94% were reported as economically disadvantaged. Martinez said course completions grew from 1,127 in 2024 to 2,219 in 2025, and he reported that 179 students who participated in the program have graduated this year, representing roughly an 83% senior graduation rate among that program cohort.
"Our goal is to increase the opportunities for students to earn credits, complete courses and improve graduation rates," Martinez said, recommending board approval to continue participation and to submit the OFSP application to TEA.
Trustees asked whether the program is flexible enough to accommodate students who work irregular hours; Lopez and Martinez described extended hours (Mondays and Wednesdays until 6 p.m.) and Saturday sessions as part of the flexible model and emphasized the program's flexibility to accept students with variable schedules.
The board voted to approve continued participation and to authorize the submission of the OFSP application to TEA.
