The superintendent for the Lake of the Woods School District told the board in a July 2 working session that his first 100 days will focus on administrative onboarding, one‑on‑one meetings with board members and staff, contract review ahead of negotiations, and outreach to community partners.
"First couple days have just been the technical pieces of, you know, getting into email and trying to get the phone system and all those other pieces going," the superintendent said, describing his immediate priorities after starting the job. He said he had toured the facility with staff members Kyle and Dale and planned to invite board members to individual meetings "to kind of give us a guide in terms of potential things to talk about" as he builds relationships and gathers priorities.
The superintendent said he is reviewing contracts to prepare for the district's negotiation cycle and hopes to schedule the initial committee meeting near the end of July or beginning of August. He also said he plans to attend professional development for new superintendents — the Finance Academy and the Great Start cohort, sponsored by the Minnesota Association of School Administrators — on July 15–16.
Board members encouraged the one‑on‑one interviews as a way for the superintendent to get a footing and understand local concerns. A board member asked whether the superintendent had met Principal Mary Merchant; the superintendent said he had not yet but expected her to be in next week. He reported meeting preschool staff (including Nicole) and several area superintendents who had reached out after his arrival.
"I'm going to extend invitations to the board members so that we can set up one initial one‑to‑one meetings ... because I just want to ... start building these relationships," he said. He added that part of the work will be engaging with city and county government meetings and being visible in the community as the school year approaches.
Next steps recorded in the working session: the superintendent will send invitations for one‑on‑one meetings with board members and aim to have a committee meeting scheduled by late July; the board asked staff to surface items and concerns during onboarding.
