Council hears urgent water-system repairs and authorizes up to $5,000 for replacement parts

New Richland utilities staff told the council on June 8 that recent lightning/storm damage and aging equipment have left the system operating on reduced redundancy. Staff reported well-pump production figures and said one variable frequency drive (VFD) and some return pumps are decades old; they provided a parts estimate and warned that repair or replacement could be costly.
The utilities representative said repair quotes had been prepared and that repairing certain elements could cost tens of thousands if full replacement or labor were included; a parts quote for specific items was discussed in the packet. The council voted to authorize up to $5,000 for immediate parts and VFD purchases so staff could keep the plant operating; if costs exceed that, staff will email the council for expedited approval rather than wait for another meeting.
Council members asked staff to work with LMCIT about potential insurance coverage for storm-related damage and to present a multi-year asset-management and street/sewer overlay plan to support bonding or grant applications. The administrator said MRWA would assist with rate and fund-structure reviews to improve grant eligibility and long-term planning.
