Berkley commissioners review sample bylaws, discuss 4‑H and animal acreage concerns

At the July 18 meeting, the Berkley Agricultural Commission reviewed sample bylaws from other towns and set a plan to draft local bylaws with input from members ahead of the next meeting.
Members discussed possible content for the bylaws. Ed Harmon asked that 4‑H projects be explicitly included in the commission's bylaws. Angela Young asked whether Berkley has a minimum acreage requirement for a small farm; George Faria responded that state laws set some acreage and animal‑specific requirements. Lisa Tetreault said that, in prior contact with a State Inspector, the inspector advised following the town's by‑law setback requirements and exercising common sense to avoid overcrowding of animals.
Commissioners agreed to review the sample by‑laws individually and return with ideas at the next meeting. They also agreed to meet every two weeks to focus on by‑law drafting with a target of completing the bylaws in time for the November election. No public comments were recorded on the by‑laws during this meeting.
