Board approves carriage house at 89 Court, asks for finalized cupola drawings

Sue Davis of SD Atelier Architecture presented the plan for a modest, single‑car carriage house that would be built in the rear yard as a subservient secondary structure; she described material options (board‑and‑batten versus clapboard), a low plate height for portions of the structure and window/door options to avoid overlooking neighbors.
Members praised the overall design and scale; several suggested minor refinements to siding choice and window details. The board specifically required the applicant to bring back finished cupola drawings for approval.
“In the matter of the application for 89th Court Carriage House Construction… the design review commission issues the following decision on 07/24/2024 to approve with the following condition that the applicant will return the finished drawing of Cupola for approval,” a member read as the formal decision, referencing the approval language.
Samantha Bosshardt of the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation spoke in support and clarified the foundation’s recommendations about siding and window types. The applicant was told to finalize the cupola and return to the board for that detail.
The approval is conditional: the application was approved subject to the cupola being returned for review; the rest of the project may proceed per the board’s authorization.
