City staff updated the council on progress in the Comcast/Kexus fiber build‑out in Nowthen and outlined next steps for outreach.
Planner/Clerk Johnson Nash told the council that Comcast and its contractor Kexus have released 1,324 passes into Nowthen and that roughly 24% of those eligible addresses have active service so far. The northwest roll was nearly complete and unsubsidized or outlying sections remains pending until other street work is finished. Staff reported a recent uptick in inquiries after a new area released online.
Comcast has offered to sponsor a community meal and help with a veterans‑memorial event; staff asked permission to coordinate a ribbon‑cutting or community day timed with a memorial unveiling. Council gave direction to staff to move forward with scheduling and outreach coordination.
Clerk Johnson Nash summarized: "A great project from Comcast — they continue to do a good job — and we’re working with Kexus to get the remaining areas live and to coordinate community events as neighborhoods are activated." Staff will publish maps and notices as additional areas open and will try to accelerate outreach in areas with active interest.
What’s next: staff said it will place an update on the city website, post maps showing completed rolls, and coordinate with Comcast on event timing and veterans‑related programming. Residents who want service are encouraged to register through Comcast’s signup portal; staff will continue monthly coordination calls with the provider.
