Task force backs adaptive reuse of historic downtown courthouse as visitor center

The Williamson County Courthouse Task Force voted on June 22 to recommend that the historic courthouse on the Franklin square be repurposed as described in a memo from Franklin Preservation Partners.
A speaker who presented the memo said the building is relatively small, used sparingly by the courts, and could serve Franklin as a visitor center managed by the visitors bureau. The memo estimated capital costs in the range of $300,000 to $500,000, including reopening the balcony on the second floor to allow for historical interpretation and public programming.
"We recommend that since Franklin lacks one visitor center for historical purposes ... the county authorize such a use as set out in the memo," the presenter said while moving the recommendation. Members voted in favor of making the recommendation.
Ending: The recommendation will be included in the materials the task force forwards to the county commission on July 13.
