Silver Creek Township approves up to $15,000 for tree trimming; culvert motion deadlocks 2-2

The Silver Creek Township Board of Supervisors on Oct. 1 approved spending up to $15,000 for tree trimming and debated several infrastructure items, but a proposed culvert lowering on Baker Avenue ended in a 2-2 tie.
Chairman Mike Helman moved to authorize Carr's Tree Service to perform trimming with a motion that the board said covered costs up to $15,000; Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The estimate presented for the work was $12,000.
The meeting next turned to a Baker Avenue culvert lowering project. Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen raised concerns that altering the flow of water could create legal liability for the township. Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to proceed with the culvert work as needed and to have the township attorney address liability questions; Chairman Helman seconded. The motion was not carried after the board recorded a 2-2 vote.
The board also discussed maintenance of a Chevrolet 1500. The board tabled a decision on tire replacement while it considers the possibility of replacing the vehicle. Clerk-Treasurer Alana Paumen said the township has included a hydraulic study in the 2025 budget; once completed the study should remain valid for five years and staff will solicit estimates.
The board adjourned maintenance business without further action on the culvert; the approved tree-trimming work is the primary maintenance contract authorized at the meeting.
