Deal Commission discusses lake cleanup plan, algae reports and a follow-up on 2023 oil spill

Commissioners discussed coordinated lake cleanup efforts, recent algae observations and follow-up on a historic oil spill during the June remote meeting.
The commission agreed to hold a boat-focused lake cleanup on Aug. 9 with centralized drop-off points at the Allenhurst and Asbury Park boat ramps and walking teams for shoreline pickup. "It'll be in person, but it's going to be more boat related," the chair said, asking staff to publicize the date and logistics.
A resident reported green water near the eastern portion of the lake by Dill Golf Club. Staff said short-lived algae blooms have occurred after hot weather but that the state's HAB (harmful algae bloom) dashboard does not currently list Dealer Lake as experiencing a harmful bloom. "Dealer Lake is not identified as a water body right now that is experiencing a harmful algae bloom," a staff member said, noting that county or municipal health departments confirm blooms when they occur.
Separately, the chair said he sent a new letter to the Department's cleanup contractor to press for additional oil-spill cleanup in Asbury and other inlet areas resulting from a March 2023 incident. He said the commission copied local engineers and staff and asked the Department to address remaining fouled areas.
No formal health advisories were issued during the meeting; staff recommended residents follow posted guidance from health departments and the Department's HAB dashboard for updates.
