The Nowthen Planning & Zoning Commission recommended approval of a variance to allow existing accessory structures totaling roughly 7,850 square feet to remain on a lot created by the Palamino Estates final plat.
Staff explained the request: the lot was adjusted to meet a five-acre threshold and the variance would allow certain historic farm buildings (a garage and two barns) to remain though total accessory square footage would exceed the ordinance cap of 6,400 sq ft. The proposal includes conditions that the buildings may be maintained but not replaced or expanded and that a deed restriction be recorded describing the maintenance-only allowance.
A neighbor, Kelly Oscar Tag, spoke in support, saying the buildings have historic value and urging appropriate maintenance if the variance is approved. Another resident asked about the number of new lots (staff replied the plat creates four lots).
Commission discussion noted prior, similar variances granted to preserve farm buildings and that the adjusted lot line increased lot one to five acres to meet the eligibility threshold. Commissioner Reese moved to recommend the variance with staff conditions; the motion passed by voice vote and the item will proceed to the city council for final action.
