Public-health staff told the Town of Danvers Board of Health on March 5 about recent substance-use outreach, naloxone distribution and local overdose statistics drawn from state data.
Staff said they presented a naloxone and opioid-awareness session at Danvers Cares that drew about 30 attendees, including high-school students; test strips and naloxone were provided. Minutes report that all school NaloxBox units have been installed and naloxone plus QR-code inserts are being distributed to each school.
The board reviewed 2024 overdose-related statistics from the state: 13 resident deaths (a 7% decrease from the previous year), with seven deaths attributed to alcohol, three to stimulants and four to opioids; emergency-room visits numbered 268 for any substance (215 alcohol, 14 opioids). Minutes note ER data may undercount overdoses reversed with naloxone without EMS transport, and that the state requires reporting of naloxone distribution and use.
Recorded upcoming events include high-school substance-use assemblies on March 18 and 20 and a Community Baby Shower on March 21 in Salem with 133 participants and 27 vendors registered. Staff also reported ongoing Public Health Emergency Preparedness training for staff.
