Town staff present temporary traffic plan for Pope’s Landing; site visit requested

Christopher Sanborn, Danvers’ Director of Natural Resources, presented a proposal to address parking and traffic concerns at Pope’s Landing, saying the Town is working with a representative from the Massachusetts Office of Fishing and Boating Access on a revised traffic pattern.
Sanborn said the plan is initially intended to be temporary with the option to make it permanent later, and he indicated the Town can accommodate concerns raised about navigation by larger boat trailers. According to the transcript, Mr. Sherry of the Office of Fishing and Boating Access "expressed concern that larger boat trailers may have difficulty navigating some of the proposed changes;" Sanborn said the Town will make adjustments to address those concerns.
The committee asked staff to arrange a site visit and invited Mr. Sherry and members of Town management to attend. Vice Chair Louie George recommended a site visit that includes Mr. Sherry and Town management staff; member Tom Perry emphasized that traffic issues occur throughout the day and said he hopes proposed changes will significantly reduce current problems. Select Board Liaison Dee Djoko asked whether the changes would be temporary or permanent; Sanborn reiterated the plan would begin as temporary and could be made permanent over time.
Sanborn said the Fire Chief has reviewed the draft plan and confirmed it would not impede emergency vehicle access, and that he will consult with Mr. Henry, Director of Land Use and Community Services, for additional process guidance. He also told the committee he prefers to involve the state Office of Fishing and Boating Access before implementing modifications.
The committee did not vote on the plan during the meeting; Sanborn said a follow-up meeting is expected within a month to review updates and develop a finalized plan.
