Board approves Wawa plan at McGalliard and Nebo with larger signs and front pick‑up lane

A proposed Wawa convenience store and gas station at McGalliard and Nebo won approvals from the Board of Zoning Appeals on motions covering driveway width, sign size and height, and a front-facing pick‑up lane intended for app orders.
Developer representatives told the board the project would occupy about 2.3 acres at the corner now occupied by Benson Motorcycles. The developer asked the board to allow the existing 40‑foot curb cut to remain so vehicle circulation aligns with the access across Nebo and to permit a drive‑up pick‑up lane the applicant described as an app‑ordered pickup window rather than a traditional drive‑through.
“It's not a traditional drive‑thru,” the project's presenter said. “This is when you order from an app. You then can not get out of your car. You can just pull around, give them your number, and they'll give you your food.” (Presenter: Mimiwitz)
The board handled the site requests in separate motions. It unanimously approved keeping the 40‑ft driveway (7–0). It approved the signage variances by a 5–2 vote, allowing a taller and larger monument sign than the ordinance normally permits; members voting no said they were concerned about size and consistency. The board also unanimously approved the front pick‑up lane facing Nebo (7–0).
City and county staff told the board that the project team has submitted a traffic‑impact study to the Indiana Department of Transportation and will continue coordination with INDOT and the city engineer during design. The applicant said underground fuel tanks would sit under the canopy and that tanker access and circulation have been studied.
The board's approvals were conditioned on the applicant's continued work with city and state transport officials and on standard permitting steps. The project will next move into final engineering and permitting with INDOT and local building inspection.
