Public Service committee advances water, valve, pump and boiler contracts

The Public Service, Public Utilities and Green Committee advanced several infrastructure and maintenance contracts meant to improve system resilience and replenish critical parts inventories.
Service Director Chris Leutle described an ordinance to construct two permanent underground emergency water main connections (one linking to Medina, one to Cleveland Water) that would allow the city to turn on interconnects during supply emergencies. The committee also approved a phased replacement project for raw water intake valves at Lake Rockwell after staff found valves that were difficult to service and could not be reliably exercised.
At the water reclamation facility, the committee approved contracting to replace two aged hydronic boilers that are more than 25 years old; staff said replacement could yield efficiency gains and reduce winter risk. Committee members approved contracts to restock chemical transfer pumps used in finished‑water operations and to purchase Gorman‑Rupp pump parts for lift stations (32 of 36 stations), noting in‑house crews would perform installation.
Several items were advanced under suspension of the rules because of operational urgency and lead times for equipment; one suspension vote produced a single abstention. Committee members asked for follow‑up on vendor selection details and agreed staff would provide procurement specifics.
All items were recommended to the council on the consent agenda.
