Union City council approves emergency stormwater pipe replacement and sinkhole inspection

The Union City Borough Council voted unanimously July 9 to authorize emergency stormwater repairs after borough staff reported a collapsed section of galvanized pipe and a sinkhole behind 98 East High Street.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips told council that a sinkhole roughly 3 feet wide by 8 feet deep appeared in the rear yard of 98 East High. A camera inspection showed the first 50 feet of the storm line was cement and in good condition, but the downstream 90–100 feet were galvanized pipe with the bottom eroded; the inspection camera fell into the failing section, Phillips said. Mansfield quoted $14,500 to replace the corroded galvanized section with plastic pipe.
Councilor Steadman moved to approve Mansfield’s work at the quoted $14,500, and Councilor Kerns seconded; the motion carried unanimously. Council also authorized Mansfield to cut concrete and open a separate problem in Municipal Lot #1, approving up to $6,000 for that work after contacting McLallen Construction for pricing and availability; that motion passed unanimously.
The repairs are intended to stop recurring water intrusion that borough staff and a resident said has damaged property during heavy rains. Borough staff said they will coordinate scheduling with the contractors and follow up on the Municipal Lot #1 assessment once bids are confirmed.
