Town staff submitted an AARP Community Challenge grant application that would pay for portable “mobi‑mats” to help wheelchairs, walkers and other assistive devices traverse rough surfaces at Simsbury recreation sites and, potentially, at the Simsbury Performing Arts Center, the Age‑Friendly Community Subcommittee reported Tuesday.
The meeting minutes note that Tom Fitzgerald in the Town Manager’s office completed and submitted the application by the March 4 deadline. If the grant is awarded, the subcommittee said the mats would be deployed at various recreation locations and possibly used during summer events at the Performing Arts Center to improve access for people using mobility aids. The town expected to be notified about the application sometime in May.
The minutes do not specify the requested grant amount or which sites would receive mats if awarded. The subcommittee will await AARP's decision and determine procurement details and placement after notification.
