Owosso parks commission notes new scoreboard, considers park programming and maintenance needs

At its May 27 meeting, the Owosso Parks and Recreation Commission approved the agenda and April minutes, heard that the softball scoreboard project is complete and that park signs are being installed, reviewed a menu of park programming ideas, and received a request to mow Bentley Park.
Vice-Chair Jeff Selbig called the Owosso Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 7:04 p.m. on May 27, 2026, at Harmon Patridge Park. Commissioners approved the meeting agenda and the April 22 minutes by voice vote.
Amy Fuller, assistant city manager, told commissioners the scoreboard project at the softball fields has been completed and that park signs have been ordered and are beginning to be installed. The update was listed under old business and noted as complete work and ongoing sign installation.
Under items of business, Commissioner Emily Olson presented a package of proposed park activations and programs intended to increase use of city parks. The proposals included a story-walk trail, a passport program, pop-up events, outdoor movie nights, nature-explorer kits for families, community campfire nights, glow-night events, forming a youth advisory team for parks, river-based programming, a community events calendar, and kite-flying days. Commissioners discussed the ideas as potential seasonal and volunteer-driven activities to boost engagement.
Commissioner Kevin Maginity raised a maintenance concern during the public comment portion, saying Bentley Park needs mowing and weedwhipping; commissioners noted the request for grounds maintenance attention.
The commission set its next meetings for June 24, 2026, at Hugh Parker Soccer Fields and July 22, 2026, at Bentley Park. Commissioner Ellen Rodman moved to adjourn at 7:47 p.m.; Commissioner Carol Anne Smith supported the motion and the meeting was adjourned.
