Simsbury commission weighs centralized Accessibility Coordinator to oversee ADA compliance

Chairman Edward LaMontagne convened the Simsbury Aging and Disability Commission on April 14, where members discussed a proposal to create a centralized Accessibility Coordinator to oversee Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and coordinate related town initiatives.
The proposal, discussed during the commissions old-business segment, would assign a single staff role to ensure ADA compliance across town facilities, manage accessibility projects and serve as a project manager for initiatives flagged by the commission. Commissioners described the role as intended to centralize responsibility that currently is distributed across departments, streamline implementation of accessibility improvements and provide a point of contact for community partners.
Members also tied the proposal to near-term activities: the commission listed Accessibility Awareness Month in June and discussed collaborating with Simsbury Community Media on an informational video. Jennifer Kirkland said she will share a written report summarizing takeaways from a Yale Symposium on Disability & Accessibility she attended; the report will include insights on disability and voting access that commissioners expect to factor into planning.
No formal motion or vote on creating the coordinator position is recorded in the minutes; the chair circulated committee assignments for event planning and the item will remain on the commissions agenda for follow-up. The commission adjourned at 7:10 P.M.; its next meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2026 at 6:00 P.M. at Eno Memorial Hall, Youth Room.
