The Sawyer County Public Safety Committee voted to adopt a resolution that will raise certain medical examiner fees and index those fees to the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) for a five‑year period.
Staff explained the change was needed because many medical examiner/coroner fees had not been adjusted in several years and that state law previously placed limits on fee increases; the resolution sets an effective date of Oct. 1 for an initial increase and then annual CPI‑based adjustments each January for five years, with a sunset after five years or an option to revisit the policy.
A member moved to approve the resolution and another member seconded; the committee voice vote was recorded as "aye" and the motion carried. Committee discussion emphasized that the change is intended to align the county’s fees with typical current charges for cremation releases and other services and to avoid annual separate resolutions by automatically tying increases to the CPI.
The resolution will be forwarded as required by county procedures.
