Danvers library director says state aid looks steady but warns of local budget pressure; announces book sale and pollinator garden
Summary
Director Noelle told trustees that the state budget shows a modest increase for libraries but warned that municipalities are considering cuts — Marblehead was highlighted as facing a possible 50% library-budget cut and decertification risk. The Friends’ book sale and a Girl Scouts pollinator garden were also announced.

Director Noelle told trustees that current budget signals at the state level are cautiously positive: the governor requested a roughly 2% increase for libraries and the legislature appears to be matching that request. She said some previously cut federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funds have been restored, though some grant programs are only partially resumed and awards remain limited.
Noelle asked trustees to remain vigilant because some towns are facing deep municipal budget pressure; she cited Marblehead as an example that could face a 50% cut to its library budget and — if that occurs — a risk of state decertification, which would affect interlibrary borrowing arrangements. She asked trustees to be prepared to advocate for library funding at the town and state level.
Operational updates included a Girl Scouts–installed pollinator garden on the library grounds, with a small public opening planned (June 1 at 4 p.m.), and an upcoming internal hiring process for an assistant head of reference and information services, with interviews scheduled next week.
The Friends of the Library reported a successful year, noted museum-pass usage, and reminded the public that the Friends’ annual book sale will accept donations June 1–6, with a members-only preview on the evening of June 9 and sale days June 9–13.
Trustees thanked the outgoing treasurer for her service and approved the treasurer’s report by roll-call vote.
Noelle closed by asking trustees to continue advocating for the library’s role in town budgets and to track the Marblehead situation as a cautionary example.
