Clay County OKs cooperative agreement with MCC Maple Woods to support Missouri Humanities curriculum

The Clay County Commission voted unanimously to approve a cooperative agreement with Metropolitan Community College (MCC) Maple Woods (item 2026-184) to support a Missouri Humanities grant project that will incorporate local history into MCC classes and community programming.
Cynthia Connor, Clay County grant coordinator, described the project as a collaborative effort since February to adopt local authors, historical material and site visits into classroom curricula. "I think there's about 20 classes that'll hit about 450 students," Connor said, and staff said portions of the programming will be open to the community.
MCC representatives Terrell Tigner (vice president, Maple Woods campus) and Dr. Rebecca Studebaker (Dean of Instruction) detailed plans for spring 2027 programming organized by monthly themes: African-American history, Border Wars, women's history, outlaw folklore, indigenous peoples and agricultural heritage. Dr. Studebaker said the work included identifying authors, speakers, and field trips to county sites.
Commissioners praised the partnership. Commissioner Carpenter called the project "really wonderful" and thanked county staff for building the relationship. The motion to approve the cooperative agreement passed on roll call 6-0.
What happens next: The county and MCC will finalize the grant application to Missouri Humanities and continue coordinating curriculum, speakers and field-trip logistics for spring 2027. Staff said they will provide updates to the commission as the project develops.
