The Northbrook School District 28 Board of Education on June 23 approved an amended FY26 budget and a slate of construction and personnel contracts, moving the district closer to finishing summer site work ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
Jessica Donado, presenting the budget recap, said the amendment primarily "cleans up and updates our grant budgets," fixed a duplicated administrative cost that had temporarily pushed administrative costs over a 5% guideline, adjusted investment interest income because of delays in Cook County tax receipts, and realigned bond-sale and construction timelines. She told the board the district remains close to its previously projected deficit for the fiscal year after adjustments.
After brief clarification from board members — including a confirmation that the line labeled for referendum construction funds should be separated when assessing the district's operating deficit — the board moved, seconded and approved the FY26 amended budget by roll-call vote.
At the same meeting the board also approved multiple construction-related items: pay application No. 2 for the new Meadow Brook school (site and storm-trap work), pay application No. 10 for the Metobrook gymnasium (retainage to be held until punch-list and closeout), and contracts for construction materials testing at Greenbryer and Westmore (a not-to-exceed contract with Geocon). Buildings & Grounds staff noted the same inspector will cover multiple sites to reduce travel costs.
The board approved the assistant director of student services contract for Metobrook (Whitney Fine), and routine minutes and consent-agenda items were also approved by roll call. Where a roll call was recorded in the meeting transcript, all present board members — Member Arms, Member Horowitz, Member Beef Tank and President Silvershack — registered affirmative votes.
The approvals clear the way for continued summer construction and staffing transitions. Board members scheduled a finance-committee meeting in July to review the tentative budget for FY27.
The board adjourned to closed session later in the evening to discuss student disciplinary cases and planned to reconvene only to adjourn.
