A Southampton Township resident urged caution on Nov. 20 about any township move to assume ownership of the BEMS landfill, citing past problems at nearby properties and urging the committee to consider potential liability and cleanup obligations.
Pat Finlay of Hawkins Road told the committee, “Be very cautious about the township considering of taking over ownership of the BEMS landfill if indeed they are considering,” and referenced experience with dumping on her property after she purchased it. The minutes do not record a committee response or staff follow-up at the meeting.
Earlier in the public-comment portion, Pat Topham of 450 New Road commended Boy Scout Troop 31 for work on the Eagles Walk trail and for installing new benches. Representatives of the Hampton Lakes Fire Department were present and sworn in; a deputy chief from Hampton Lakes and the chief of the Vincentown Fire Department reported on monthly calls, training, and events.
The meeting record shows no formal action or direction taken on the landfill topic; the concern was entered into the public record during the comment period. If the township pursues any ownership or stewardship role for the landfill, staff or the committee would need to return with details about liabilities, remediation responsibilities and financial implications before any formal decision is made.
