Residents press Southampton leaders on road, school-bus safety and utility outages

Residents used the Committee’s public-comment period at the Dec. 18 meeting to press local officials on traffic safety and school-bus routing, and a committee member raised concerns about electric-utility outages.
Debbie Murphy of 65 Maidstone in Leisure Towne thanked the Committee for reducing the speed limit on Big Hill Road and presented a petition asking that tractor-trailers be prohibited and detoured from using that road. She asked the Committee to consider restricting tractor-trailer routing; no formal action was recorded in the minutes.
Kevin Dinuzzo of 43 Oxford Circle told the Committee he was concerned that new school-bus routes no longer stop at each home; he said his children must walk about 150 yards along a road without sidewalks to reach the bus stop and then wait in the rain and cold. Dinuzzo said he raised the issue at a recent School Board meeting and reported no action. Mayor James F. Young, Sr. replied that the Township cannot direct the School Board on routing decisions and suggested residents seek sidewalks through their homeowners association.
Committeeman Ronald Heston said he had reviewed JCP&L outage records and was dissatisfied with the results; he also reiterated a long-standing request for a left-turn arrow at the intersection of Retreat/Main and Route 206 and said a petition would be posted in January to forward to the Governor. The minutes record Heston’s intent to continue monitoring outages and to advance the petition but show no formal vote or further directive at the meeting.
Other public commenters offered thanks and monthly reports: Phyllis Fisher thanked Committeeman Heston; Scott Mitchell of the Vincent Fire Department and Joe Cosell of the Hampton Lakes Fire Department reported calls and activities and said the two departments planned to drive Santa through the township this year.
No formal action on the petitions, tractor-trailer routing, or school-bus routing was recorded in the public minutes; the Committee then entered executive session to discuss contracts, personnel and shared services.
