Economic Development Committee hears moratorium, agriculture updates; public hearing set for Sept. 25

The Economic Development Committee met Sept. 11 at the Village Building and received several updates on a town moratorium affecting development and agricultural review processes. Chair Kristina Doucharm called the meeting to order at 8:47 a.m., and the committee unanimously approved the July 24, 2024, meeting minutes (moved by Maarty Reilingh; seconded by Amanda Bodian).
Supervisor McKeon reported that the sewer law process is concluding and that a public hearing on the matter has been scheduled for Sept. 25, 2024. McKeon also told the committee that reviews of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation wetlands standards are in progress and that an Agricultural Business District review remains pending. Jacob Tesla said the Town Board is on track to close out the moratorium by the end of the year.
Chair Doucharm and other committee members urged the Town Board to provide more frequent and clearer communication about the moratorium’s requirements, its potential economic impacts, and the expected timeline. Committee members said they want clearer notices and guidance so local businesses and farmers can plan accordingly.
Melkorka Kjarval, deputy mayor of the Village of Red Hook, proposed inviting the county’s new full-time Ag Navigator to a future EDC meeting so the navigator can describe the position’s services and how local farms might access support.
The committee scheduled its next meeting for 8:40 a.m. on Sept. 25, 2024, at the Village Building. The meeting adjourned at 9:39 a.m.
