Residents urge support for MLK parade; one resident raises policing concerns

Members of the W. Martin Luther King parade committee and other residents addressed the council during public comment that followed agenda business.
Laura Irwin (co-chair of the parade committee) told the council the committee’s 30th Martin Luther King parade is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 17 at 11:00 a.m., with lineup at 9:30 a.m., and asked the council, staff and community to participate and support the event. She asked the council to keep co-chair James Holder in prayer as he was hospitalized and unable to attend. Jacqueline Jadon White and other community members urged broad council participation in the parade and related breakfast events.
Robbie Smith Latimore congratulated Dorothy Rosier on her appointment as city clerk. Eugene Smith, president of the Southside Community Association, requested a meeting with the city planner and community development staff to partner on neighborhood improvements.
Separately, Frank James described alleged incidents involving both a city police officer and a sheriff’s deputy, said he had attempted to file complaints without resolution and asked the council how to pursue internal complaints and investigations. Staff and council offered to speak with him after the meeting; no formal council action on the complaint was taken during the session.
