Burlington approves consolidated transit grant application for operating aid and potential bus replacements

Transit staff (Mr. McGregor) said the application requests $247,000 in state STA dollars and $486,000 in federal transit operating assistance (FTA). The application also includes four buses for possible replacement; staff explained the selection of capital awards is dependent on scoring by the Iowa Department of Transportation and that including multiple buses in the application preserves the city’s ability to replace any that score highly enough to receive funding.
Council closed the hearing and voted to approve a resolution authorizing staff to apply for the consolidated transit funds. Mr. McGregor noted significant back‑end paperwork will be required from staff after approval; the vote was recorded in the affirmative for Weiss, Wilson, Phillips, Kreitzer and Scott.
Next steps: staff will submit the application to Iowa DOT and FTA and will follow up on scoring results to determine whether any of the requested bus replacements will be funded.
