Commissioners back state resolutions to rename short stretches of U.S. 50 and SR 350 to honor local veterans

State Representative Alex Zimmerman asked the Ripley County commissioners for formal local support of two memorial resolutions to rename short highway stretches in honor of local veterans.
Zimmerman described Captain William Homer Burkett (born Milan, served in the U.S. Air Force; killed on combat mission in Vietnam) and requested the Ripley County mile of U.S. 50 from County Road 750 to the Dearborn County line be considered for a memorial designation. He said the adjacent Dearborn County mile is being proposed in the same legislative effort to honor Lance Corporal Donald Henry. Commissioners moved to support the request; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Zimmerman also requested local blessing to pursue naming about 1 mile on State Road 350 near Old Mill Road for Kenneth Nollman, a Vietnam-era helicopter pilot decorated for repeated heroism; commissioners again voted supportively. Zimmerman said the requests now go to the interim study committee and, if advanced, will move through the legislature in the next session. Commissioners indicated they would participate in any joint memorial ceremony if the resolutions pass.
