The Grimes City Council voted on June 23 to approve an amendment to its law-enforcement services agreement with Polk County that funds three additional full-time deputies and adjusts the contract cadence.
Jake (city staff) told the council the amendment adds $2,300,000 in the current year to support three full-time deputies assigned to Grimes and moves the agreement away from a 10-year fixed term to an ongoing relationship with costs re-evaluated every two years to avoid dramatic cost disparities between multi-year budget cycles. "Those are the two big things," Jake said: the additional deputies and the change in term length.
Council members expressed appreciation for the partnership with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and said the additional deputies would improve presence in the growing community. Questions focused on enforcement expectations for e-bikes and e-scooters and how the county and city would coordinate enforcement priorities.
Council approved Resolution 06-3126 to adopt the amendment. The agreement will be implemented through the Polk County Sheriff's Office and coordinated by city administration during successive budget cycles.
