Council approves water‑plant alarm purchase and metal detector; discusses other departmental needs

On May 11 the New Richland City Council approved several departmental purchases and discussed other maintenance and capital needs.
Utilities/people‑service staff described safety concerns at the water treatment plant and requested electronic chlorine and sulfur dioxide alarms that would report to staff phones. The council authorized the purchase of two alarms and related setup up to $5,000 to link into the plant’s existing notification system.
The council also approved the purchase of a metal detector (utility locator) not to exceed $1,500 to remain in New Richland for locating manholes, curb stops and sewer elements. Staff said the device will reduce time spent searching for old infrastructure and keep the tool locally available.
Other department items were discussed but not finalized: ambulance staff asked to pursue a washer/dryer for linens pending electrical hookup and cost estimates; city staff presented two exterior paint estimates for city hall and deferred award pending confirmation of paint pricing and scope; a park revitalization committee requested renderings to aid fundraising and provided a consultant quote of up to $4,000, which council suggested could be included in next year’s budget or funded now if fundraising needs require it.
Personnel action recorded: council approved a budgeted step increase for the maintenance supervisor (grade 5, step 7, $32.84 per hour).
