St. Louis Board approves minutes and hears committee updates on tornado recovery, Legionella testing and HIV outreach

The St. Louis Board of Health and Hospitals voted to approve the May 21, 2026 meeting minutes during the opening roll call and then received committee updates on community outreach, disaster recovery and disease monitoring.
A community engagement report described ongoing collaboration with Shante Flulen to expand the department’s ‘‘EPI minutes’’ — short informational summaries intended for dissemination in federally qualified health centers and library branches; Aphinia Healthcare and Family Care Health Center are working to implement the materials so patients can access health updates. The committee also reported continuing tornado recovery efforts in North City led by community-based organizations, with health, housing, food and social-service navigation still being coordinated for affected neighbors.
During the quarterly joint committee update, members noted decreased community alarm about a recent ‘‘hivirus’’ incident but said the department continues monitoring. Board members raised a separate water-safety concern: Legionella bacteria were detected at the St. Louis Public Schools headquarters, and testing is underway to determine activity levels; the department reminded school staff about reportable-disease protocols and cautioned staff and the public to watch for symptoms.
The board also heard departmental outreach reports: the department’s annual health-and-wellness fair at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy featured screenings and presentations on nutrition, behavioral health and prostate cancer; the HIV prevention team has participated in 36 events and reached over 870 individuals and will provide testing and outreach at Pride on June 27–28.
Board chair Kristen Simpson reported that she led an advocacy letter, signed by the board, urging an increase in the department’s budget; Simpson read the letter as public comment at the Board of Estimate and Apportionment. Governance committee chair April Mckens Jolly reminded members to complete a distributed survey; an upcoming public-health career and job expo is scheduled for Oct. 30 at the Delmar Divine.
No formal policy votes beyond the minutes approval were taken. The board set follow-ups and will discuss items at future meetings; the next meeting is scheduled for July 16.
