Marshall council approves demolition bid for former aquatic center site

Preston Stendrew of the parks department said staff received four bids, three from local firms and one from the metro area, and recommended awarding the work to the low bidder. "We recommend approval," Stendrew said, noting that nearly all bids came in under the $300,000 placeholder the city had budgeted for demolition.
Stendrew described the planned scope as removal of pools and surrounding structures while leaving the main building in place; crews would fill pools, remove manholes and concrete basins, regrade the site and place black dirt and seed. He said the city is evaluating options to convert part of the remaining building to additional storage.
Councilmember Jim moved to accept the bid and Craig seconded; the council closed the vote and the motion passed.
Council discussion flagged a defined "substantial completion" date in the contract, but staff did not recall the exact deadline at the meeting. Staff also noted potential limited damage to an access road during demolition and said they will work to minimize and repair any impacts.
Next steps: staff will finalize contract scheduling and monitor progress, with demolition expected to start in the fall and substantial completion required by the contract terms.
