Buxton updates: roads, volunteer firewood, cable franchise talks and upcoming community meetings

Town staff and selectmen on June 24 updated the Selectmen on several routine public-works and community matters, including road repairs, a volunteer wood distribution program, discussions about cable franchise fees, and upcoming local events.
Staff reported earlier-week meetings with Police Chief Collins: two new officers will start on successive Mondays, a cruiser involved in an accident is at Moody’s, a PT test for applicants is scheduled for Saturday, and the department is looking for a dispatcher. The cruiser dedication is set for Saturday at noon at the police station.
Staff said a representative identified in the minutes as Mark Buyer from Soccer River Cable Company visited to discuss franchise fees and that the town signed up for assistance to help guide franchise-fee work. Separately, a vendor told staff they intend to submit a bid for curbside disposal service by July 1.
Public-works items included plans to address deteriorating American flags on poles at Osborne and Hannes Metal Road, a storm-related washout at the end of Skip Road where the state placed riprap, and a pledge to seek contractor help (the town of Gorum was mentioned) to dress up dirt roads and grading needs. Bids for paving, crack sealing and roadside mowing were announced as forthcoming.
A board member said CMP had agreed to take responsibility for and do more extensive repairs than initially planned on Henry Circle and part of Henry Hill Road; code enforcement and staff indicated they expect tarring work by the end of the year. The transcript records the board’s appreciation for CMP’s willingness to remediate a neighborhood noise/road issue.
Emily reported she met Ray Salmon at the transfer station; Salmon is organizing volunteers to cut donated wood on Saturday mornings for distribution to residents who need heating fuel. During public comment one resident raised concerns about a large dead tree near a new house and was directed to contact Public Works.
Announcements: a public meeting about dam decommissioning is scheduled for June 25 at 6 p.m. at Hollis Town Hall; the American Red Cross blood drive will be July 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at town hall; and the town parade will be Aug. 1, 2026, with applications available and the theme "Rocking in the USA." The board apologized for a missed livestream of the June 13 town meeting.
The meeting concluded with routine scheduling and adjournment at about 7:15 p.m.
