The Gilmer City Council voted Feb. 10 to place a sales‑tax restructuring and increase on the May 2, 2026, ballot. Ordinance 26‑012, approved unanimously, would ask voters to terminate the Type A Economic Development sales tax authorized under Chapter 504 of the Texas Local Government Code (0.50%), adopt the Type B Economic Development sales tax authorized under Chapter 505 (0.25%), and increase the general municipal sales tax by 1.25 percentage points.
Councilmember Jerry Webb moved to approve Ordinance 26‑012; Councilmember Jasmine McDowell seconded and the ordinance passed 5–0. City staff did not present alternate revenue estimates or a detailed spending plan at the meeting; council discussion as recorded in the minutes does not include allocation of the additional general‑sales‑tax revenue or a proposed effective date beyond placing the proposition on the ballot.
Because the action was only to call a special election and put the ballot language before voters, the council did not adopt related spending measures at the Feb. 10 meeting. If voters approve the ballot proposition, subsequent council actions would be required to adopt the new tax structure and to set how any newly generated revenue is allocated.
