The Coralville Public Library is operating without hot water after the building’s original hot water heater failed earlier in the week, Director Alison Ames Galstad told the board.
Galstad said staff member Nat Christenson noticed damp carpet, which led to the discovery that the 2008 hot water heater had 'exploded' and caused interior wetting. Library staff and maintenance (Kevin and Charlie, named in the minutes) cleaned the affected area. Galstad said the café area has its own small water heater and remains separate from the main system.
Galstad told trustees the library will solicit three bids to replace the failed hot water heater. The board was informed this was the original 2008 unit and that the building historically did not have a whole-building filtration system for many of those years.
Why it matters: the lack of hot water affects staff operations and patron services, and replacement will require procurement and budgeting steps. The board recorded the incident and the plan to obtain competitive bids.
Board action and next steps: no emergency appropriation was made at the Feb. 4 meeting; staff will obtain three bids and bring recommendations to the board for consideration.
