County updates: detention center, courthouse expansion, medical office and sports complex advance

County staff provided a broad status update on multiple major capital projects during the May 20 meeting.
JCAR Detention Center: Construction began in November 2025; precast walls and cells have been set for the women's housing expansion, work on piers and footings is under way for the male housing expansion, and staff projected overall completion in early 2028.
Courthouse Expansion: The Board approved a GMP in March and a groundbreaking was held in April. Construction is scheduled to proceed per the approved contract and staff provided progress photos and timeline notes.
UNC Health / Pardee Medical Office Building: Site work is largely complete at the Spartanburg Highway site, the slab has been poured, and steel erection has begun. County staff reported the contractor is on schedule for a May 2027 completion target.
Henderson County Sports Complex: Mass grading, water and sewer infrastructure, and athletic-lighting conduit work are complete or near completion; restroom facility work has begun and the project is on track for an October 2026 opening. Commissioners asked staff to resolve dead-tree removal with adjacent property owners before the complex opens.
Staff emphasized schedule dependencies (utility extensions, GMP approvals, and permitting) and said they would continue to provide milestone updates to the board as projects advance.
