Polk County commissioners approve claims, set maximum levies for local districts

The Polk County Board of Commissioners voted on Aug. 20 to allow county claims and draw warrants against the funds listed in the meeting packet and to set maximum levy caps for several local subdivisions.
Chairman Jerry Westring moved to allow the claims and have warrants drawn; Commissioner Boss seconded. The roll call vote recorded Westring, aye; Boss, aye. Commissioner Boruch was absent.
The claims package included General Fund payroll of $74,736.62 and numerous vendor payments such as a $7,875 payment to NE Law Enforcement Training Center and $3,050 to Physicians Laboratory, P.C. Road Fund claims included Road Fund salaries of $33,978.13 and a $22,507.61 gravel purchase from Overland Sand & Gravel. The packet listed additional claims for the Senior Citizen Service Center Fund, Inheritance Tax Fund and the Weed Fund. The meeting minutes do not record a single summed total for all claims; the board approved the items as presented.
Separately, Commissioner Boss moved — and Westring seconded — to allocate the following maximum levies for subdivisions subject to the county’s levy authority: Fire Districts at $0.040000 per $100 of valuation; Polk County Ag Society at $0.010000 per $100; Cemetery Districts at $0.010000 per $100; and the Historical Society at $0.003000 per $100. The roll call vote was Boss, aye; Westring, aye.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved at the start of the session. The minutes state that the Board also approved collateral pledged by Polk County banks and held in custody by the County Treasurer; the minutes do not record the mover/second or a roll call vote for that specific item.
The board adjourned at 11:50 a.m. and scheduled meetings for Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, 2024. County Clerk Debra S. Girard and Chairman Jerry Westring signed the minutes.
