Commission backs Williamsburg lights zoning study, hears parks updates on fountains and Longbridge repairs

Parks staff summarized a recent presentation on drinking fountains: installing a fountain costs roughly $30,000 and the county maintains about 86 fountains systemwide, many of which are frost‑free and operate year-round. Newer fountain models include water-bottle fillers and low-level dog bowls; staff noted maintenance needs (plumbing and sand clogging) and said two full‑time plumbers handle repairs and routine service.
Members discussed a Riverhouse redevelopment that will phase out some on-site recreational facilities; the parks commission previously wrote a letter asking the county board to require Riverhouse to provide on-site facilities or financial contributions so the county can build replacement amenities. Commissioners said master planning and property transfers are likely to take many years, and they will monitor the matter.
A localized high-wind event at Longbridge Park damaged turf at Field 4; a coach's eyewitness account triggered an immediate DPR response. Staff said DPR maintenance crews worked through the day to repair the turf and programming was not missed the next evening. Because of the damage, staff moved Longbridge Field 4 earlier in the synthetic-turf replacement sequence so the replacement is now slated for summer FY27.
Other agenda items included scheduling a possible July meeting, planning an August field trip (options included Barcroft, Metropolitan Park/Crystal City and local gymnastics facilities), and continued coordination with civic associations on neighborhood-based walking events and outreach.
