Council tables Lawrence Street lighting plan, asks staff for streetscape options

The Dublin City Council on Feb. 19 tabled Resolution 2609, a proposal to authorize Georgia Power to install and maintain two decorative lamp posts on Lawrence Street, and asked staff to return at the March 5 meeting with broader streetscape options and cost estimates.
Staff described the request as coming from the Downtown Development Authority on behalf of Miller’s Soul Food and reported an upfront cost for the two lights of $20,245.45 and an ongoing maintenance/service charge of $23.93 per light per month (figures as presented at the meeting). Several council members questioned whether placing only two poles would produce suboptimal spacing and urged staff to develop a plan for the entire block — and to estimate the cost of undergrounding utilities while work is performed.
Councilman Smith moved to table the resolution until the council’s March 5 meeting to allow staff time to prepare streetscape concepts and cost options; Councilman Benny Jones seconded and the motion passed by voice vote.
Council members noted the aesthetic intent of matching green lamp posts used on nearby Madison and Jackson streets and asked staff to provide alternatives that balance cost, placement and pedestrian safety. The tabling preserves the request from the DDA while creating time to evaluate broader options for Lawrence Street.
