Maryville School construction-trades grant scope shifted indoors; RDC increases 2027 funding
Summary
The Hobart Redevelopment Commission approved increasing the 2027 education and workforce training grant from $30,000 to $50,000 and accepted Maryville School Corporation’s scope change to build eight indoor multipurpose cabinets for students instead of outdoor pantry boxes, citing reduced liability and improved student learning opportunities.

The Hobart City Redevelopment Commission on March 16 voted to increase the 2027 education and workforce training grant from $30,000 to $50,000 and to accept a scope revision from Maryville School Corporation that moves a planned student construction project indoors.
Presenter (S5) read a letter from Terrell Taylor, construction trades instructor at Maryville High School, explaining that the project will now produce eight indoor multipurpose distribution cabinets (one per school) to store and distribute food, clothing and hygiene items. The letter said the indoor approach protects donated goods from weather and vandalism while providing hands-on carpentry and construction experience for students.
The commission discussed liability and spoilage concerns tied to outdoor food boxes and agreed the revised indoor design addresses those issues. Staff (S2) noted the change keeps the project within the originally approved budget and framed the revision as a stronger service-learning opportunity that allows school staff to monitor inventory and ensure respectful distribution.
Chair (S1) asked for a formal motion to accept the amended application as stated in the letter; members moved, seconded and voted in favor. The board recorded the approval on the record.
The action amends a previously approved grant award; the increase in the commission’s broader education/workforce grant pool (from $30,000 to $50,000 for 2027) was also approved earlier in the meeting. The commission did not specify additional implementation deadlines in the discussion; staff indicated project details and oversight will follow standard grant reporting procedures.
The next procedural step is for staff to record the scope change and work with Maryville School Corporation on implementation logistics and any required documentation or monitoring reports.
