Prairie City OKs equipment purchase, park fee increases and several operational measures

Prairie City Council approved multiple new-business items on Feb. 12 ranging from equipment purchases to rental-rate changes. Council approved a trade-in and purchase plan for a 2024 John Deere 444 front end loader and associated equipment from Murphy Tractor with a purchase price of $178,960 and a first payment set for February 2026; staff were directed to pursue best financing terms and to compare quotes with an alternative Ziegler quote previously received.
Council renewed the Pella Tree Service contract for one year, approved participation in a 12-week Public Works internship program and PCM school-to-work participation, approved a tax-abatement application submission for a resident at 200 W McMurray St by the March 1 deadline, and directed the city administrator to send a letter to the resident at 508 W South St asking the resident to pay for needed sidewalk construction with potential alignment to a city concrete project for cost savings (permit fee to be waived).
The council also approved Park Board-recommended rental rate increases: community building rental to $150 without alcohol and $225 with alcohol, shelters to $50, and Garden Square Park rental to $200 without alcohol and $300 with alcohol. Council directed Public Works to create a $5,000 plan for cemetery landscaping materials and to research a community committee to raise additional funds. No action was taken on city direction for depositing and use of a bequest from the William Dale Van Maanen estate.
All motions passed on roll call votes.
