Prairie City swears in councilor Beth James, approves wide consent agenda

Prairie City Council welcomed newly appointed councilor Beth James and unanimously approved a broad consent agenda Feb. 12 that included routine minutes, large vendor invoices and Resolution 2-12-25-1 approving bills and transfers.
Mayor Chad Alleger swore in Beth James as a newly appointed Prairie City councilor at the start of the Feb. 12 meeting. The council then approved a sweeping consent agenda that covered financial statements, board minutes and a package of vendor invoices, including an Accurate Commercial invoice for $163,757.93 and MSA invoices totaling $50,185.84.
The consent motion, moved by Joe Disney and seconded by Phil Holland, carried on a roll call vote. The agenda approval also moved two previously scheduled old-business items into the consent agenda before the vote.
City staff gave routine department updates. Public Works Superintendent Harry Brannen noted staff attendance at the Iowa Rural Water Association conference; operator Dylan Cornelison entered and won a water-sample contest. Police Chief Kevin Gott reported an ATE appeal is under review by the Iowa Department of Transportation. Library Director Sue Ponder thanked Public Works for snow removal efforts. City Administrator Jerry Moore said the CIARAD property purchase is nearing completion and a FEMA reimbursement claim has been submitted and is under review. Fire Chief Ryan Van Der Kamp said the department responded to three calls in January and continues work on a new building project.
The council approved an EMS/Fire Building cost increase (fill lines and valves) of $3,786.75 and directed KCL to pay Accurate Commercial’s $378.68 markup. That motion was moved by Disney and seconded by Holland and carried unanimously.
