Grand Marais Public Library hires clerk, outlines summer reading and staff-development plans

Electra Branwin, the library director, reported that the library filled a clerk position and that the staff is preparing a summer reading program that begins June 8 with multiple reading logs, partner prizes from local businesses and a finale parade featuring Big Animal Productions’ Maka the Bear.

Branwin described partner organizations (Java Moose, Dairy Queen, Hungry Hippie Tacos, Superior Creamery) and a plan to distribute book vouchers redeemable at Drury Lane Books for participants who complete reading logs. The program will run through Aug. 14 and will include hands‑on family events such as a reptile program, an aquatic-insects exhibit with touch tanks, and a finale parade to Harbor Park.

On staffing and capacity, Branwin said she is exploring professional development packages to strengthen team functioning, with consultant proposals ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 for more comprehensive multi‑month work but a feasible initial option at about $5,000 that would include six months of coaching for the director plus an onsite staff workshop. She also described grants and pilots: a Hammer grant application for award‑winning children’s titles, an Arrowhead Library System grant to trial a Tony Box (a screen‑free audio toy), and a request to trial Vox books that integrate audio playback into physical books.

Trustees welcomed the programming, asked for outreach materials to share with lodges and visitor services, and offered to help distribute promotional digital cards to partners. The board did not take formal votes on the grants or pilots and directed staff to return with final plans and timelines.
