Council discusses sewer I&I, Alliant to help cover repairs after drainage-tile damage

Council heard that a sinkhole near a resident’s property traced to a damaged drainage tile was caused when Alliant bored through the tile while installing a gas line; Alliant participated in repairs and will pay part of the cost. Gary Fricke told the council that a sinkhole near the property of Brian Juel was traced to a break in a city drainage tile. Investigation indicated the tile was bored through when Alliant installed a gas line in the 1980s–1990s; Fricke said Alliant was contacted, assisted with repairs and will pay a portion of the repair costs.
Fricke also reported that Visu Sewer televised lines while in town and identified a concentrated area of inflow and infiltration (I&I) at the north end of Butler Street. The council heard that Needham's will work with the city to locate and repair the damaged tile or other sources feeding excessive water into the sewer system, with the aim of reducing inflow to the lagoon.
No formal directive to appropriate new funds was recorded; the discussion centered on locating the I&I, arranging repairs and coordinating cost-sharing where third parties (Alliant) are responsible for damage identified during the investigation.
